The ARCade — DIY Engineering's handcrafted arcade & pinball cabinet running ARCadeOS
ARCadeOS

The operating system that powers the ARCade cabinet.

The software behind DIY Engineering’s handcrafted arcade & pinball cabinet — a polished, controller-first frontend for arcade, pinball, classic consoles, PC and Steam that looks after its own artwork and updates, and even shares games between ARCade cabinets.

Latest stable release — v1.28.42 · delivered automatically

Made for the ARCade cabinet

Your whole game room, on one screen

ARCadeOS is the software heart of the ARCade — DIY Engineering’s handcrafted arcade & pinball cabinet. Power on and you land in a single, beautiful, big-screen interface — no desktop, no juggling emulators, no keyboard required. Pick a game and it launches on the right system automatically.

Every system, one screen

Arcade (MAME & FBNeo), real pinball on Visual Pinball and Future Pinball, classic consoles through RetroArch, plus PC & Steam titles — all in a single library.

Built for the cabinet

Drive everything from your controls. Joysticks, buttons, spinners and trackballs are all understood — and mapping a control is as easy as pressing it.

It looks after itself

Box art, video previews and metadata are fetched and organised for you, and a guided first-run wizard sets the cabinet up from scratch in minutes.

Signature feature

ARCade Share

Cabinets can share games with each other over the private Tor network — opt-in per game, with optional auto-download for the systems you choose. No accounts, no setup.

Play together

Built-in netplay lets two cabinets face off head-to-head, so game night isn’t limited to one machine.

Always current

New features and fixes arrive quietly in the background over a secure, signed update feed. Your cabinet simply stays fresh.

Signature feature

ARCade Share — cabinets that share

Flip one switch and your cabinet can quietly offer the games you choose to other ARCadeOS cabinets, and pull down theirs — carried privately over the Tor network. No addresses to swap, no accounts, no port-forwarding.

  • Opt-in per game — nothing is shared unless you choose it.
  • Auto-download new titles for the emulators you pick, complete with artwork.
  • Private by design — traffic rides Tor onion services, cabinet-to-cabinet.
  • Zero fuss — discovery is automatic; shared games just appear.

For cabinet owners

Your cabinet keeps itself current

ARCadeOS checks this secure feed and installs new releases on its own. There’s nothing to download by hand — here’s what’s live and what just landed.

What’s new v1.28.42

  • Big libraries feel instant — jumping around with the A–Z bar no longer stalls the game grid. Artwork now loads in the background, so browsing thousands of games stays smooth instead of pausing on every jump.
  • Settings, reorganised — nine clear sections ordered by how often you use them, with every control reachable from the joystick and buttons. All your volume controls now live together, and adding games is one place instead of three.
  • Make it yours — choose your accent colour — a new Display setting recolours the whole frontend (buttons, highlights, focus rings, the name-reveal glow) to the accent you pick.
  • Built-in cabinet health & self-repair — a new diagnostics screen (Settings → About) checks your emulators, cores, BIOS, storage and ARCade Share, repairs missing pieces with one tap, and hands you a ready-to-send support report.
  • Smarter ARCade Share library — games you already own now show in full colour and play instantly, instead of appearing as duplicate downloads.
  • Name your cabinet — first-run gives each cabinet its own retro handle with a slot-machine reveal, shown to other cabinets on ARCade Share.
  • Download shared games from the tile — pull a game straight from its ARCade Share tile: it fills from greyscale to full colour as it arrives, with the percentage on the tile and a toast when it lands.
  • Live cabinet discovery — ARCade Share now shows only the cabinets actually online and names each one as it’s contacted, so you can see exactly what’s happening.
